Your Number 1 Winter Driving Checklist!
When it comes to winter driving, it’s vital that you’re well prepared. At this time of year, you never know what the weather will do next — ahem, Beast from the East — and the conditions on the roads can make even the shortest of journeys longer and trickier than usual.
To make sure that you’re ready for anything this winter season, we put together a list of a few essentials you should do or have with you in case the Beast from the East visits us again.
De-icer & an Ice Scraper
It is a legal requirement in the UK to ensure your front and rear windscreens are clear before driving, so de-icer and an ice scraper are two of the most necessary winter driving essentials. Whilst some modern cars have heated wind-screens, many do not or simply take longer than some would like. If your vehicle does not have this feature, it’s important that you take the time to make sure that you have any ice or snow cleared from your windows before setting off on a journey.
While de-icer can help speed up the whole process, an ice-scraper allows you to manually remove any tough ice or snow from your vehicle, so you can clear your car quickly. It’s convenient to have these must-haves in your car at all times during the winter months.
Emergency Winter Car Kit
An emergency winter car kit is essential to help you be prepared for the winter conditions and comes in a handy storage bag that is the perfect size to stow easily in the boot of your car.
Some of the things that you can usually find in the typical emergency winter car kit are;
- a folding shovel to aid with digging your tyres out of deep snow,
- a Hi-Vis jacket, ensuring other drivers and road users can see you,
- a torch and batteries for use in the dark, and more.
- Reflective warning signs to place in front and behind your vehicle to help warn other motorists you have broken down.
Warm Clothing & Blankets
If you do happen to break down on your travels, you might have to stand outside your vehicle whilst you await assistance. So that you’re as comfortable as possible, it’s important that you have some warm clothing to wear, such as a thick coat, scarf, gloves and a hat. You could also keep some blankets in your car to ensure you and your passengers stay warm despite the dropping temperatures.
Food & Drinks
Breaking down at the roadside isn’t ideal - but it can be made even worse if you end up being stranded with an empty stomach. So, to keep your hunger pangs at bay, it pays to make sure your car is stocked with food and drinks. Go for snacks that are non-perishable, such as cereal bars and crisps, and don’t forget to pack a few bottles of water too. If you’re planning a long journey, you could think ahead and take a flask of tea, coffee or soup with you to keep you well fed and watered.
A Sat Nav or Road Map
Winter weather conditions can make driving tricky, so it’s important that your attention is on the road in front of you at all times. However, if you’re embarking on a long drive somewhere new or unfamiliar this chilly season, there’s no doubt you’ll want to make sure that you’re going the right way, meaning it can be easy to become distracted by road signs. So, to help you get to your destination, you could use a sat nav. Alternatively, if you have a passenger in the car, you could use a road map instead.
